Kennington Cleaners Health and Safety Policy
Kennington Cleaners is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, clients, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our cleaning services. We recognise that effective health and safety management is essential to the success of our business and to the high quality of service we deliver in homes, offices, and commercial premises.
This policy outlines our approach to identifying, managing, and reducing health and safety risks associated with professional cleaning activities. It applies to all employees and contractors engaged by Kennington Cleaners, regardless of location or role.
Health and Safety Objectives
Our main objectives are to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health, and to promote safe methods of work. We aim to:
Identify hazards associated with cleaning tasks and work environments. Assess and manage risks through suitable control measures. Provide appropriate training, information, and supervision. Supply and maintain safe equipment and materials. Encourage a positive health and safety culture across the company.
Responsibilities and Management
The management of Kennington Cleaners has overall responsibility for implementing and reviewing this policy and for ensuring that adequate resources are provided to maintain high standards of health and safety. Managers and supervisors are responsible for:
Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and kept up to date. Communicating safe systems of work to staff. Monitoring compliance with procedures and addressing unsafe behaviour. Reporting, recording, and investigating accidents, incidents, and near misses.
All employees and contractors are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes following company procedures, using equipment correctly, wearing any required personal protective equipment, and reporting defects, hazards, or concerns without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Kennington Cleaners conducts risk assessments for cleaning tasks, equipment, chemicals, and premises where we work. These assessments consider factors such as slips and trips, manual handling, use of cleaning machinery, exposure to substances, lone working, and security risks at client sites.
Based on the findings, we implement safe systems of work and provide clear instructions to staff. These may include designated cleaning methods, restricted access to certain areas, safe use of ladders or steps, approved lifting techniques, and time schedules designed to reduce risk to both staff and building occupants.
Training, Information, and Supervision
We provide health and safety induction training to all new starters and ongoing training to existing staff to ensure they understand their responsibilities and can carry out their duties safely. Training covers topics such as safe handling of cleaning chemicals, correct use of equipment, manual handling, use of personal protective equipment, and emergency procedures.
Supervisors monitor working practices and provide guidance, support, and refresher training where needed. Written guidance, method statements, and safety instructions are available and are explained to staff so they can be followed in day-to-day work.
Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Many cleaning tasks involve the use of chemicals that could be hazardous if misused. Kennington Cleaners ensures that all substances used are assessed for their risks and that appropriate control measures are in place. We follow manufacturer instructions, use only approved products, and provide suitable storage facilities.
Staff are trained in correct dilution, application, and disposal of chemicals, and in what to do in case of spills or accidental contact. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, or masks is provided where required and must be used as instructed. Substances are clearly labelled and kept out of reach of unauthorised persons, especially in client premises.
Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
We ensure that all cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines, and electrical tools, is maintained in a safe condition and inspected regularly. Defective equipment is taken out of use immediately and reported for repair or replacement.
Where risks cannot be eliminated, personal protective equipment is supplied and maintained at no cost to employees. This may include gloves, aprons, non-slip footwear, masks, or eye protection depending on the task. Staff are required to use protective equipment correctly and to report any damage, loss, or defects.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported to a supervisor as soon as reasonably practicable. Records are kept and reviewed to identify trends and areas for improvement. Where necessary, corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence.
Staff are briefed on emergency procedures relevant to their work locations, including fire safety, evacuation routes, and first aid arrangements. When working at client premises, our staff cooperate with on-site procedures and follow any additional safety requirements requested by the client.
Welfare, Wellbeing, and Safe Working Practices
Kennington Cleaners recognises the importance of employee welfare and wellbeing. We seek to organise work in a way that minimises stress, fatigue, and lone working risks, and encourage open communication about any concerns related to health and safety.
Staff are expected to maintain good personal hygiene and professional conduct while on duty. Eating, drinking, or smoking in work areas where cleaning chemicals or equipment are in use is prohibited to reduce contamination risks. Any health condition that may affect the safe performance of duties must be disclosed so that support and reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
This health and safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, working methods, or legal requirements. We welcome feedback from employees, clients, and other stakeholders to help improve our practices.
Kennington Cleaners is dedicated to continually improving health and safety performance and to integrating safety considerations into all aspects of our cleaning services. By working together and following this policy, we aim to maintain a safe, healthy, and professional environment for everyone involved in or affected by our work.
